We’re out on the street raising awareness about the demands for concessions in the auto bailout loan guarantees. Some of the bailout terms attack the rights of unionized autoworkers in both the US and Canada: they demand lower labour costs; they require give backs; they require that Canadian workers follow the dictates of right-wing US southern senators and the Ontario Tories of Harper’s Federal Cabinet. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty supports their conditions too.

Workers can influence this current situation in many ways. Here are some things we’ve started, we are:

building support among other working people;
explaining the importance of Detroit 3 survival;
showing what’s behind the crisis;
arguing against employee “match” demands;
showing that government’s elsewhere don’t impose anti-worker concessions;
challenging their ‘right’ to demand concessions;
supporting minimum concessions for now and getting those concessions reveresed in the future;
promoting “Buy Canadian” procurement policies by governments;
exploring auto industry restructure plans to provide sustainable jobs and products. (more…)
