Cherry TSANG Chit-Lai (Piano)
Cherry Tsang is currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, where she studies with Barry Synder. Beginning the piano aged four, she trained at the Academy for Performing Arts in Hong Kong under the tutelage of Gabriel Kwok, before continuing her studies abroad. She is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including a 2-year full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club for overseas study, the Eastman Scholarship, and the Liberace Scholarship Fund.
Cherry won First Prize in the Hong Kong (Asian) Piano Open Competition in 2001 and was a semi-finalist at the Theodor Leschetitzky International Piano Competition in June 2004. In 2006-07, she was awarded both the “Performance Certificate” and the “Excellence in Accompanying Award” titles from the Eastman School of Music.

Cherry has an active career both in Hong Kong and overseas. Her public performances as a soloist include the Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, as well as the Schumann Concerto and the Chopin Concerto No.1 with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, she participated in a performance of Chen Xiaoyung’s Invisible Landscape for the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) conference and was the featured soloist in the premiere performance of Lau Wing Fung’s piano concerto Devil Attack. She has also represented Hong Kong in a concert tour to France, Britain, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Singapore in 2003, and was a featured artist in Radio Television Hong Kong’s “Young Music Maker” series. Cherry was chosen as one of the 24 Best Young Pianists in Hong Kong and performed in a Fund-raising Concert in June 2008. And later she was invited to play the Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto with the Hong Kong Ars Nova Orchestra.
While at Eastman, Cherry performs regularly as a solo, chamber, and ensemble pianist. As an active chamber musician, she is a member of a piano trio formed in 2006 at the Eastman School. They have been widely acclaimed by the staff for their performances of the Smetana, Arensky, and Beethoven trios. She has also participated in many orchestral and ensemble concerts as the ensemble pianist. Cherry took part in the recording of the Canadian Brass Quintet with the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Other collaborations include Australian flautist Jane Rutter, French clarinetist Florent Heau, Eastman faculty James Thompson and John Marcellous, and the Principle trumpeter in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Douglas Prosser. Cherry has also taken part in masterclasses with such distinguished pianists as Arie Vardi, Howard Shelley, Boris Berman, Alicia de Larrocha and Dmitri Bashkirov.
