Tristan and Isolde versus original legend

Posted by Yuka as Movies

So, here’s the thing: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the movie, but they did change some things about the original story. For instance, in some versions there is a love potion involved, which Tristan and Isolde drink together by “accident”. That’s not such a big deal; actually I think I remember someone on the special features saying they left that part out on purpose. But what about the ending? In pretty much every version I’ve heard, Isolde dies the same day as Tristan. And how about the love triangle between Tristan, Isolde, and the French princess? I understand that all adaptations of stories have to be changed somewhere along the line, but still…

Yeah, I read one french version in my creative writing class and absolutely loved it. So, when I saw they were making a movie I got really excited. While I love the movie and I really think it’s well shot and beautifully written, I wish they would have followed the original legend. The complexity of the real story along with the fact that they’re actually in love and not just ejoying the sex, made it a lot better. So yeah, I think the original legend is better… but I still absolutlely love the movie!
